Lighting Your Pool Waterfall: LED Ideas That Actually Work

A waterfall at night is a different feature entirely. How to light sheer descents, scuppers, and rock falls so they look as good after dark as at noon.

Most pool waterfalls are bought for how they look in daylight, then enjoyed most after dark. A sheet of falling water catches light beautifully, but only if the light is in the right place. Here is what works, drawn from the features we ship at PoolWaterFountain.com.

Light the water, not the wall. The single most common mistake is aiming a spotlight at the wall behind the waterfall. The water reads as a dark streak and the wall glares. Instead, light the falling sheet itself — either from inside the spillway or from below the surface of the pool.

Built-in LED spillways are the cleanest option. Many sheer descents and scuppers in our catalog come with an integrated LED strip or accept one as an add-on. The light travels with the water, so the whole sheet glows evenly from lip to pool. If you are still choosing a feature, this is the lowest-effort path to a great night look.

Niche lights work for rock falls. For rock and grotto-style waterfalls where the water breaks and tumbles, a submersible LED niche light placed in the catch basin or just under the surface where the water lands creates a bright, churning glow. One well-placed light beats three poorly placed ones.

Color or white? Warm white (around 2700K–3000K) flatters stone, copper, and travertine and never looks dated. Color-changing RGB is fun for parties, but most owners leave it on a single color 95% of the time. If your budget forces a choice, buy a quality white light over a cheap color one.

Practical notes. Run low-voltage (12V) LED systems only — never line voltage near water. Put the transformer and connections somewhere dry and accessible. And add a timer or smart switch so the lights come on at dusk without you thinking about it.
